Sassy Superman Remixes

I did the remix of ACTION COMICS #351 almost a year ago and thought I had posted it.
This past weekend, I came across the cover to ACTION COMICS #353 and thought "I smell a follow-up!"
So I went to post it and link it to the original post. Except there doesn't appear to be an original post. I guess I forgot. So now you get a two-fer!!

The Perplexity of Rainbow Boy

Rainbow Boy is quite the interesting character.

His name and the fact that his power is "the brilliance of [his] rainbow..." all point to one thing. He's got to be gay.

I've known quite a few gay men who seem to have that power.

The problem is that rainbows didn't become "gay" until around 1978, and Rainbow Boy debuted in 1942. So the whole rainbow motif doesn't really support any conjecture on that part.

What does make a case for his fairy-ness is that fact that every time he enters a room, he comes flitting in like he's doing some ballet:

Hydroman and Gruno don't seem too thrilled by his flamboyance...

One the other hand: Rainbow Boy is a DICK!

In the story I ran a few weeks back, Rainbow Boy helps save the earth from invasion by kidnapping the alien general and taking him around to show how being a dictator is a bad thing. Here's a look at the horrors they encountered:

Now the problem with this is... Rainbow Boy let all those people DIE!

Yes, he is trying to prove a point, but couldn't he have proven it by "Look at what they're about to do...now excuse me while I go rescue those people!" But he makes no attempt. I'm surprised he didn't bring along popcorn for the show.

And he's practically smiling in panel four when he says, "I'm going to show you more!" With an explanation point...

Yippee! Let's go!!

Rainbow Boy is a bad bad person. He may have saved the world from an alien attack, but my conclusion is he's still to evil too be gay.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Captain America stands out!

So, being unfamilar with Rodolfo Migliari's work (he who drew the cover to GREEN LANTERN CORPS #27), I did a little internet research. I was stunned by what I found.
After all the turmoil the web-world endured over Citizen Steel...I can't believe there was no hubbub over this one.
I didn't come across so much as a message board post about it. Marvel apparently wasn't too worried about it. They didn't alter the artwork or try and hide it.

Look at the detail in the folds of the fabric! And no one cried out for censorship!?
That's not even average-Joe packaging. That's ample. Where were the rapid fanboys?
And there are nipples! Didn't Joel Schumacher get a lot of crap for nipples?

Citizen Steel had to be neutered...

I really love Brandon Peterson's art. He must have a real job somewhere, because he just doesn't draw enough comics! I wish he'd do more interior stuff (and I wish he'd do it for DC! LOL). I love his line work. I wonder if he does his own colors? If not, whoever did on these covers is an awesome match. The lighting, palette, textures...they all just really make these images pop! Awesomeness.

BLAZE BARTON and the Tentacles of Doom!

Here's an irresistible golden-age classic! Well, probably not a classic. But who can resist a story that's only 4-pages long where the hero is ensnared in tentacles on every page and by the end of the story loses his shirt!!!

It's cute (on page 4) how he gets so into playing with the tentacles that he completely loses track of the girl he's trying to rescue. Guess a guy's got to have his priorities!!

Superboy Remix - probably NSFW

I actually did this 3 years ago, but I just stumbled across it on my computer and decided that it still holds up, LOL.

So one day while surfing I came across the cover to SUPERBOY #89, and I was like, "whoa." It just seemed so odd: We've got two guys here, presumably straight, who don't know each other, and the first thing they do is use their "see-thru" visions to check out what's going on under the clothes? I mean, besides homos, who does that!?

So I did a kinda "photo" manip on it, except that it's not a photo. And I'll warn you it might be a little racy. If you've got uptight, conservative, homophobic issues, you might wanna pass.

Dick Cole, Wonder Boi

Honestly, I can't even remember why, but for some reason I was looking for info on the golden age character Dick Cole, the Wonder Boy. And along the way I stumbled across an old blog post about the Dick Cole story from 4 MOST COMICS #1 (Winter 1942). OMG! It's so totally gay! Which was the point of the other blogger's post. Here are a few sample panels:

Ribaldry with Amazing-Man and Tommy!

Ribaldry. What a great word! I stole it from The Absorbascon (after I looked it up, LOL!)!

Batman could learn a lot from Amazing-Man in how to cultivate the perfect boy sidekick.

First, you need villains who like to drug and enslave sidekicks...

Stripping and branding is always an added plus...

If all else fails, push him to his knees and slip him a Mickey...
"Special" pills. Heh.

You're best bet, though: Raw material.
Start with someone who thinks like you do...

Superpowers: Origins - Boy King & the Giant

One of the many golden-age characters to make a cameo in PROJECT: SUPERPOWERS #0 was Boy King (along with his "sidekick" Giant). But who is/was Boy King?
Well, we'll get a clue from his origin story printed in CLUE COMICS #1 (January 1943). Page 2 of the story proclaims that "the people of Swisslakia were light-hearted and gay..." And you may think that gay is used as a colloquialism of the day. But when you get to page 11 and see the attention to detail that went into the Giant's, um...below-the-belt region...you may start to suspect otherwise. Enjoy!
