Sixty-Nine

WORLD'S FINEST COMICS 69
(March-April 1954)

SUPERBOY 69
(December 1958)
Because apparently, Superman and Batman have nothing better to do with their time than protect a sidewalk piggy bank.

He's wearing the Superboy costume. So he knows he's Superboy. So he must have some kind of powers. Like maybe invulnerability? So maybe it won't hurt if he falls?

ACTION COMICS 69
(February 1944)

SUPERMAN 69
(March-April 1951)
It appears that sixty-nine is the Prankser's favorite number...

BATMAN 69
(February-March 1952)

THE BRAVE AND THE BOLD 69
(January 1967)
Guess there's nothing wrong with a little Bat-bondage amongst friends...

ALL-AMERICAN COMICS 69
(November-December 1945)

MYSTERY IN SPACE 69
(August 1961)
It seems like Doiby Dickles is none too happy with Green Lantern's extra-curricular activies. Jelluz much?

Really, really don't want to know what Adam Strange was up to right before the alien attacked...

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 69
(February 1969)

TARZAN 69
(June 1955)
The Kingpin likes it rough.

Just because...

Etta Candy is my hero!

How can you not love Gail Simone...?

For the uninitiated, here's some Etta from the 1940s:

Etta was actually brought back in the early 80s, and again in the late 80s (WW Volume 2), but I don't think anyone had the guts, nerve or sheer-wackiness to bring back the WOO!

Gail Simone rules the universe.

Green Lama and the Prize Fighters

Although PROJECT: SUPERPOWERS shows Green Lama running around in the 40s with a bunch of other super heroes, he never actually met them back then. Mostly because they were all published by different companies.
But he was involved in a very-brief team-up with his co-stars in PRIZE COMICS.
Along with Green Lama, PRIZE featured the super heroes Black Owl, Yank & Doodle and Dr. Frost; the funny-cartoon characters General and the Corporal; and the monster of Frankenstein.
In issue PRIZE COMICS #24 (October 1942), Dick Briefer (writer/artist of Frankenstein) decided to gather the heroic cast of characters from PRIZE together and pit them against Frankenstein (why he included General and the Corporal is a mystery lost to time). It was an 8-page story that didn't feature a lot of organized teamwork. And despite the final panel, they never returned; at least not as a team. This was their one and only get-together, and it wasn't even deemed important enough to receive a mention on the cover! Definitely not a threat to the popularity of the Justice Society!
Without further ado, it's Frankenstein vs. the PRIZE Fighters!

The Trouble with Titans

TEEN TITANS: THE JUDAS CONTRACT - Originally slated to be the third film in the DC Universe direct-to-DVD series, the project is currently on hold.

THE TITANS - Yeah, I've already mentioned that mess to the left, but it fit in with this post. The first issue is drawn by Ian Churchill (or scheduled to be, anyway). The second by Joe Bennett. Two strikes out the gate. And as much as I absolutely love GREEN ARROW/BLACK CANARY, the TITANS EAST SPECTACULAR was more craptacular than anything else. Not sure I hold out much hope for Judd Winick's handling of the Titans.

Gotta love a house ad that's drawn by an unspectacular artist who's not associated with the book. Dick and Donna look okay, altho Donna's not wearing the new costume. Kory, Vic, Gar and Raven all look like crap. Wally would look alright if not for the freaky-scary not-quite-human-looking pose...and the whole eunuch-thing going on.

Yes, I do have one question: Aside from having a cool cast of characters...what exactly is supposed to make me want to read this?

SUPERGIRL #27 - I have come to firmly believe that DC's directive to Kelley Puckett when he took over this title was something along the lines of: "We need to kill this book and fast. We want you to write completely unintelligible stories that lead nowhere. Be sure to include Superman, so it looks like we care, but write him so bizarrely out of character that he seems like an impostor. Just write the worst crap you can come up with so we can get sales down and cancel it!"

TEEN TITANS: YEAR ONE #3 - Could somebody please remind Amy Wolfram that she's no longer writing for the cartoon? I thought I was reading an updated telling of the first adventure of my favorite characters. But this totally pulled me out of the moment:Yes, the (yet another) Aqualad (as) punchline is cute and all, but I wanted to take this semi-seriously, even if it is just a comic.

DC SPECIAL: RAVEN #1 - Y'know, this could quite conceivably be the greatest comic ever written.

But I'll never know because the artwork is so horrendous as to make it completely unreadable. I tried. I really did. But by about the third of fourth page my eyes started bleeding and I just couldn't continue on. The Rob Liefeld art on Gail Simone's TEEN TITANS story a couple years back had close to the same effect. But even Rob's art wasn't this bad (and it's really hard to say that without choking). Maybe some decent coloring might have helped subdue and pull it together, but alas, that was not the case.
And the RAVEN "logo"? Talk about an afterthought...
Who thought this was a good idea?

Fictionalize it!

Alright, the new banner is cribbed from the JUSTICE LEAGUE: NEW FRONTIER SPECIAL #1. I may have to keep this one for awhile. I think it sends a message that more people need to read and comprehend...

BLAZE BARTON and the Tentacles of Doom!

Here's an irresistible golden-age classic! Well, probably not a classic. But who can resist a story that's only 4-pages long where the hero is ensnared in tentacles on every page and by the end of the story loses his shirt!!!

Ah, to be a young boy during the golden-age of comics!!

Blaze Barton travels to the Dark Side of the Moon in HIT COMICS #12 (June 1941).
written by ?; art by Maurice Gutwirth.

It's cute (on page 4) how he gets so into playing with the tentacles that he completely loses track of the girl he's trying to rescue. Guess a guy's got to have his priorities!!

Superboy Remix - probably NSFW

I actually did this 3 years ago, but I just stumbled across it on my computer and decided that it still holds up, LOL.

So one day while surfing I came across the cover to SUPERBOY #89, and I was like, "whoa." It just seemed so odd: We've got two guys here, presumably straight, who don't know each other, and the first thing they do is use their "see-thru" visions to check out what's going on under the clothes? I mean, besides homos, who does that!?

So I did a kinda "photo" manip on it, except that it's not a photo. And I'll warn you it might be a little racy. If you've got uptight, conservative, homophobic issues, you might wanna pass.
